Is it safe to have an arm lift in Istanbul? An honest guide.
In this article
Istanbul has become one of the world's leading destinations for body-contouring surgery, with experienced surgeons and modern hospitals. But standards genuinely vary, and the same city that is home to excellent, internationally trained surgeons also hosts operations that cut corners. Safety comes down to who operates on you and where — not the city itself.
Why Istanbul, and the caveat
The draw is real: high surgical volume, strong expertise in body contouring, modern facilities and prices well below those in Western Europe or North America. The caveat is equally real — a low price advertised by an anonymous agency is not the same as care from a qualified surgeon in an accredited hospital. Your job as a patient is to tell the two apart.
Surgeon credentials to verify
Look for a surgeon — not a "clinic brand" — with verifiable qualifications. Meaningful credentials include board certification in plastic surgery and membership of recognised professional bodies. For context, Dr. Erdal holds FACS (Fellow of the American College of Surgeons), FEBOPRAS (European board in plastic surgery), an associate professorship and ISAPS membership. You should be able to find and confirm who your surgeon actually is.
A simple test: can you name the individual surgeon who will operate on you, and verify their qualifications independently? If the answer is "the clinic will assign someone", keep looking.
Hospital accreditation
Surgery should take place in a licensed, accredited hospital with proper anaesthetic and emergency facilities — not an unregulated premises. In Turkey, look also for clinics authorised for international health tourism. Dr. Erdal holds a Turkish Ministry of Health USHAŞ international health-tourism authorisation, which is the kind of credential worth confirming.
Questions to ask before booking
- Who exactly is my surgeon, and what are their qualifications?
- Where will the surgery be performed, and is it accredited?
- Who provides aftercare, and what happens if there is a complication once I am home?
- How long should I stay in Istanbul afterwards?
- Will I speak with the surgeon directly before surgery?
Red flags to walk away from
Be wary of: prices that seem too good to be true; pressure to book immediately or pay large non-refundable deposits; an inability to name your surgeon; promises of "scarless" results; no clear plan for complications; and communication only through salespeople you never see again. A trustworthy surgeon welcomes your questions and gives you honest, sometimes cautious answers — including telling you when surgery is not a good idea for you.
Istanbul can absolutely be a safe place for an arm lift. The safety lives in the diligence you do beforehand.
