Scars & Healing

Life with the scar: sun, silicone — and yes, the tattoo question.

The scar pages on this site cover the trade honestly before surgery. This one covers the years after — the care that decides how quiet the line eventually becomes, and the question patients are often shy to ask.

The maturation calendar, briefly

Months 1–3: pink, firm, at its most visible — normal, not the verdict. Months 3–12: progressive fading and flattening as collagen remodels. The honest finish line: 12–18 months, when the line settles into its pale, permanent self. Judging earlier is judging a scar mid-sentence.

Sun: the single biggest variable you control

UV permanently darkens immature scar tissue — a tanned scar can stay darker for good. The rule for the entire first year: SPF 50 on any exposed scar, every time, or sleeves doing the job for you. The inner-arm placement helps (it faces your body, not the sky), but summer arms lift and wave — the cream travels with you. This one habit outperforms every scar product on the market combined.

Silicone and the honest product hierarchy

Silicone sheets or gel, used consistently from cleared healing onward, are the one topical with real evidence behind them — everything else on the pharmacy shelf is somewhere between "harmless moisturiser" and "expensive hope". Massage per your plan helps soften firmness; consistency beats intensity everywhere in scar care.

The tattoo question — asked more than you'd think

Can you tattoo over a brachioplasty scar? Honestly: often yes, with conditions. The scar must be fully mature (that 12–18 month line, respected), the tissue accepts ink less predictably than virgin skin (mature scars can hold ink unevenly — an experienced artist will test and adapt), and the decision deserves a scar that's finished changing colour first. Plenty of patients eventually incorporate the line into designs; plenty more find the matured scar quiet enough to leave alone. Both are fine endings — and either way, the first year's sun-and-silicone discipline is what makes them possible.

Quick answers

Most people can drive again once they are off prescription pain medication and can move their arms comfortably and safely — often around 1–2 weeks, but confirm with your surgeon.
Upper-body and strenuous exercise is usually cleared at around six weeks, once your surgeon confirms the tissues have healed enough to handle the load.
