Surgery is only half the story — how you recover shapes your final result. None of these tips are complicated, but together they make a real difference to comfort, healing and how your scar settles. Always follow your own surgeon's specific instructions where they differ.
1–3. Wear your compression garment
Your compression garment is one of the most important tools in recovery. It controls swelling, supports the healing tissues and helps your skin redrape to its new contour. Wear it exactly as directed — typically for around four to six weeks. Resist the urge to leave it off early because it feels restrictive; that's the part doing the work.
4–5. Elevate and sleep smart
Keeping your arms elevated when resting genuinely reduces swelling and throbbing in the first weeks. Prop them on pillows. When sleeping, stay off your arms and avoid positions that put tension on the incisions — sleeping slightly propped up often helps.
6–7. Move gently, but rest
Gentle movement and short walks support circulation and recovery, but this is not the time to test your limits. Avoid lifting, reaching overhead and any strain on the arms until your surgeon clears it. The balance is gentle activity plus genuine rest — not pushing through.
8–9. Start scar care at the right time
Once your incisions have healed and your surgeon gives the go-ahead, silicone sheets or gel are the best-evidenced way to help a scar mature well. Equally important: protect the scar from the sun for at least a year, as UV can darken a young scar permanently.
Patience is a recovery tip in its own right. Scars look their worst at one to three months and then fade over a year or more. Judging the result too early causes needless worry.
10. Avoid the common mistakes
The classic setbacks are avoidable: stopping compression too soon, lifting or reaching before you're cleared, smoking (which badly impairs healing), neglecting sun protection, and skipping follow-ups. Do the simple things consistently and your body does the rest.
