How to prepare for your arm lift: a complete checklist.
In this article
A smooth arm lift recovery starts well before the operating room. Good preparation reduces complications, makes healing easier and removes a lot of last-minute stress — especially if you are travelling to Istanbul for surgery. Here is a practical checklist; always follow your own surgeon's specific instructions where they differ.
A few weeks before
- Stop smoking. This is the most important single thing you can do. Smoking dramatically impairs healing and worsens scarring; surgeons typically ask you to stop several weeks before and after surgery.
- Stabilise your weight. Your result is based on the skin you have now. Aim to be at a stable weight before surgery.
- Optimise nutrition. Eat well, with good protein. If you have had bariatric surgery, make sure any deficiencies are corrected.
- Arrange time off and help. Plan for limited arm use in the first week or two.
Medications and supplements
Your surgeon will give you a precise list, but commonly you will be asked to pause blood-thinning medications and supplements — such as aspirin, certain anti-inflammatories, fish oil, vitamin E and some herbal supplements — for a period before surgery, as these increase bleeding risk. Never stop prescribed medication without medical advice; always clear changes with your surgeon and your usual doctor.
Bring a written list of everything you take — prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines and supplements — to your pre-operative consultation. It is the easiest way to avoid a dangerous oversight.
What to pack
- Loose, front-opening tops — you will not be able to pull clothing over your head comfortably. Button or zip fronts are ideal.
- Slip-on shoes, so you avoid bending and reaching.
- Any prescribed compression garments and your medication list.
- For travel to Istanbul: your documents, a comfortable outfit for the flight home, and entertainment for rest days.
Setting up at home (or your hotel)
- Place everyday items at waist height so you do not need to reach up or bend down.
- Prepare easy meals or snacks in advance.
- Set up a comfortable rest spot with pillows to elevate your arms.
- Keep water, phone, charger and medication within easy reach.
The day of surgery
Follow your fasting instructions exactly. Wear the loose, front-opening clothing you packed, leave jewellery and valuables behind, and arrive with a clear plan for who is helping you afterwards. If you are an international patient, your coordinator will confirm timings and transfers. Then the most useful thing you can do is rest and let your body begin healing.
