Arm Lift Recovery Timeline

Knowing what to expect makes recovery far easier. Here is a realistic week-by-week guide to healing after a brachioplasty — and how to get the smoothest result.

The short version

Most arm-lift patients are comfortable enough to return to desk work within 7–14 days, wear a compression garment for about 4–6 weeks, and resume full exercise around the six-week mark. Scars then mature over 12–18 months. Below is the detailed timeline.

Week by week

Your recovery timeline

Right after surgery

First 48 hours

You'll wake in a compression garment with your arms supported. Expect tightness, swelling and bruising. Rest with arms slightly elevated; short, gentle walks begin the same day to support circulation.

Days 3–7

Week 1

Soreness eases noticeably. Many patients fly home toward the end of this week after a post-op check. Keep the garment on, avoid raising the arms forcefully, and follow wound-care instructions.

Back to routine

Weeks 2–3

Most desk-based work and light daily activity resume. Swelling continues to settle. Any sutures or dressings are managed per your plan; light walking is encouraged, heavy lifting still avoided.

Building up

Weeks 4–6

Compression typically continues to around six weeks. Gradual return to most exercise, avoiding heavy upper-body strain until cleared. Scars are firm and pink — this is normal and temporary.

Scar maturation

3–18 months

Scars steadily fade, flatten and soften over the following year to eighteen months. Sun protection and any recommended scar care make a real difference to the final appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most international patients are cleared to fly after a post-operative check toward the end of the first week — typically a 5–7 night stay in Istanbul. Your exact timing is confirmed by your surgeon based on healing.

Usually around four to six weeks. It controls swelling, supports the tissues and helps the new contour settle. Your surgeon will give you a precise schedule.

Light activity resumes within weeks, but strenuous upper-body exercise is generally avoided until about six weeks, once your surgeon confirms the tissues have healed enough.

Keep them out of direct sun, follow any recommended scar care (such as silicone gels or sheets once wounds are closed), avoid tension on the area, and be patient — scars improve markedly over the first year.
